McDonald Observatory, Davis Mountains, Texas

The stars at night shine big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas...

They chose this site for the McDonald Observatory, home of the world's third largest telescope, because it's the least light-polluted spot in the continental US. Geek paradise, this!  We watched the sun live (actually 8 minute delay due to the speed of light) through a special filter. It was like watching a million nuclear bombs go off simultaneously. Under the circumstances, I'm glad it's 93 million miles away. -JD
